“The thing that goes the farthest toward making life worthwhile, and costs the least and does the most is just a pleasant SMILE.”       A SMILE participant

Peace of Mind for Caregivers

Caring for an older adult while also taking care of other responsibilities is no easy task.  Caregivers are often stretched in many different directions – perhaps working full-time, taking care of their own children, and caring for a parent or other older adult.  The combination can be overwhelming.  Franciscan Adult Day Center, formally known as the Sister Maureen Intergenerational Learning Environment (SMILE), offers what caregivers want: help with caring for their loved one and peace of mind.

A Vibrant, Comfortable Environment
With your loved one enrolled at Franciscan Adult Day Center, you can continue to work or receive temporary respite from what can be a "24/7" responsibility.  This helps maintain your own physical, emotional and spiritual health, allows you to have more energy to be more productive, and prevents caregiver burnout.

Nestled in Manoa Valley, Franciscan Adult Day Center offers a comfortable and secure group setting for older adults who need some assistance and companionship during the day. Participants come together for a range of structured activities to enhance their quality of life, health and well-being:

  • Intergenerational learning experiences with preschool and high school students
  • Arts and crafts
  • Exercise and therapeutic activities
  • Music
  • Games
  • Field trips and guest presentations

When Can Adult Day Services Help?

Most participants who attend Franciscan Adult Day Center cannot be left at home alone. They have some form of dementia or memory loss or need some assistance with activities of daily living but don’t need around-the-clock nursing care.

Adult day services can help when:

  • An older adult needs social interaction to prevent loneliness or depression
  • Supervision during the day is advised
  • Assistance is needed with meals
  • Some assistance with movement and exercise is needed
  • An adult could maximize his or her quality of life through activities, socialization, and professional supervision
  • The caregiver must go to work and a safe, enriching environment is needed
  • The family needs respite from the day-to-day demands of caregiving
