July 3 - Hospice Volunteer Training
Volunteering in hospice is a special gift of unselfish service to dying patients and their families. Hospice volunteers make a difference by providing support and companionship. All volunteers go through a comprehensive 20-hour training program that covers hospice role and responsibilities; hospice philosophy; communication; confidentiality; physical, psycho-social and spiritual pain; bereavement support; and basic personal care. Aug. 13 - "The New Healthcare: Ethics and Economics" Bioethics Conference
The 9th International Bioethics Conference will address the ethical impact of the new healthcare reform laws featuring distinguished faculty. Keynote speakers: Dov Chernichovsky, Ph.D. on "Cost Issues Under the New Healthcare: View from Israel" and "Looking into the Crystal Ball: Predictions for What's to Come;" and Bernard Lo, M.D. on "Are There Ethical Issues Under the New Healthcare?" and "What are the High Costs of Dying?" in addition to other lectures and panel discussions. Oct. 1 - Life, Love, Grief... and You! Conference
A grief conference for those seeking to learn more about the unique quest for life's meaning and to assist others with a refreshing and renewed approach to grief. Keynote address: Joel Levey Ph.D. and Michelle Levey, M.A on "Clear Presence & Great Compassion: Embracing the Personal and Universal Dimension of Change, Loss, Grief and Death." Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D. on "The Meaning of LIfe at the Threshold of Death: Insights in the Midst of Grief," plus an afternoon panel discussion on "Dealing with Grief in Extreme Situations." 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Ko'olau Golf Club in Kaneohe.
